i’m older than i look

Or at least that’s what people tell me. I’m 46 years old and I don’t care who knows it. I’m so grateful for every day I get to spend breathing air. May we all consider ourselves lucky to grow old.
When people express surprise upon learning my age, some are brave enough to ask how I’ve intervened in the aging process. The truth? I haven’t…but here’s my best attempt to explain this phenomena. Genetics is surely a factor. My hair hasn’t lost its pigment yet. I can’t take credit for that. There may be some practices that you can adopt to acquire similar results, though.
I love warm climates and being outdoors, but I’m very conscious about sun protection. I always wear a hat and large sunglasses to avoid squinting. I wear a rash guard in the water and on the beach if there’s no umbrella.
I use mineral sunblock, not chemical. In fact, I avoid chemicals at all costs.
I use only pure oils and waxes to moisturize. I’m vegan now, so I avoid bee products. I use a papaya enzyme cleanser and occasional glycolic acid pad or cleanse.
I don’t often drink alcohol…when I do, it’s usually a very light beer, but I’m pretty over intoxicants.
I sleep A LOT. I nap.
I prioritize expression. I sing. I travel. I smile and laugh.
I enjoy walking, hiking, jogging and biking.
I eat very clean food. Lots of avocado and olive oil.
I avoid caffeine, and only drink white or green tea to avoid teeth staining. I floss.
I meditate.
That’s really it.
I’ve had a lot of stress and trauma in my life, but it’s not written on my face.
No make up, except a sheer red gloss for dress up.
No Botox or fillers. I’d rather look old than weird.
That said: my face could be disfigured tomorrow. I understand the privilege of having a face that people don’t mind looking at, but I had nothing to do with it. I don’t stake my value on my appearance. My greatest virtues are the things I’ve done, applying my unique gifts in service to others.
My face becomes a symbol of my soul. If my actions are beautiful, people will always be happy to see me.
